The hero to so many passed away on Monday 11th of September surrounded by his family after battling cancer. Daniel was such a positive person, he would always say he was good and didn’t really let on how sick he was getting. He was still walking around at Canterbury Road Champs only 2.5 weeks earlier. Sam and I are very grateful to have gotten to say goodbye to him 4 days before he passed. It was very emotional. But also very special. It’s hard to put into words how much Daniel has done for the sport over the decades. He literally has organised so many events and put in thousands of hours through his voluntary roles at Athletics Canterbury and the University of Canterbury Athletic Club. He was the commentator at so many events over the years. He was so passionate about running and supported everyone with all levels of ability. He was so passionate about the UC club and the National Road Relay, he made it such a fun event for us all! He was the kindest, friendliest person you’d meet. Made everyone feel special. Always had a smile. He not only supported your running but also supported you as a person. He taught me so much in life and was a huge support in my career so far. Here is a message I received from Daniel when I was in Rio at the Olympics. One of the many messages from him over the years that I’ll always treasure.
