These gentle giants of the ocean began hatching at the end of August, with 19 little ones starting their journey to the ocean. The largest of all living turtles, they will swim towards deep oceanic waters where they forage primarily on jellyfish. They can grow over 6 feet long and weigh up to 2,000 pounds. It is amazing that such a large animal can survive just by eating jellies. Cape Hatteras National Seashore preserves one of the world's best examples of barrier island environments. This critical habitat supports a variety of wildlife, including animals on the endangered species list. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act this year, we celebrate victories like these leatherback sea turtle hatchlings.
