Cappadocia, Turkey’s renowned region, is famous for its iconic fairy chimney rock formations. However, beyond this, the region has a more untamed aspect that involves horses. Roaming the area are wild horses known as “yilki,” which also inhabit the regions of Samsun, Usak, Afyonkarahisar, and Karaman. Their history is fascinating: dating back to the Mongol Empire era, farmers utilized these horses for plowing and cart-pulling. During winter, to conserve resources, they would set the horses free to fend for themselves. When spring returned the following year, the horses were retrieved for work, having grown stronger through their semi-wild state. The term “yilki” translates literally to “a horse that has been released to nature.” As modernization progressed, their numbers increased, but their practical role in daily life diminished.
