On this very special day we celebrate orangutans and ask you to consider how you can take action to protect and save this critically endangered species in the wild. The orangutan is Asia’s only great ape and one of humankind’s closest relatives, sharing over 97% of our DNA. They are the largest arboreal (tree dwelling) animal on the planet and are known as the “gardeners” of the forest, playing a vital role in seed dispersion and germination, and maintaining the health of the forest ecosystem. The biggest threat to orangutans is the destruction and degradation of their tropical rainforest habitat. Human activities such as conversion of forest to palm oil plantations, logging, mining and urban expansion are the major factors contributing to the decline of orangutan populations. This has caused orangutans to become critically endangered, which is why they must be protected! There are many ways you can take action and help save orangutans and protect their rainforest home: • Avoid products containing palm oil, consider where your timber products are sourced from, and help reduce your carbon footprint by planting a tree! • Join us on an ecotour to see orangutans in the wild and witness the incredible work we do in Borneo - we still have a few spots left for our October tour. • Consider supporting OFI Australia by fostering an orangutan, helping us to purchase land, fundraising, attending an event, buying merchandise or making a donation by visiting our website - orangutanfoundation.org.au.
