I miss feeling him in ny womb today! (even though he is sleeping on my chest as I type this). Although we have a month left of the fourth trimester I am starting to feel like our postpartum bubble already has expanded to include the rest of the world. As I reflect on his birth I keep having little memories surface; moments of grace and power and beauty that have been lingering beneath the surface and that I’m just remembering now. This moment in the picture above is one of them. I am on a mattress on the floor sipping bone broth, towels scattered all around me. Dennis is emptying the birth pool, humming to himself. Lea and Mikaela are preparing tea and breakfast in the kitchen. Ringo and Quila keep walking into the bathroom to sniff the baby, and then walk out again. I had just squatted down with Finn in my arms, wrapped my fingers around the umbilical cord and yanked the placenta out😆 (it was so huge! a perfect fit for the placenta bowl!). Releasing it brought immediate relief. I leaned back and took a breath and Finn gave me this look like, “oh, hey! It’s you!” - recognition and surprise all at once. I took this picture. He was only half an hour old but was already becoming familiar with the sounds of our household; Lea laughing, the dishwasher being emptied, the kettle coming to a boil… Everything was just so normal. A regular day, and an extraordinary day all at the same time. His transition from the womb to my arms was the most incredible feat - an absolute miracle - but also so natural and undramatic. June 18th really was just a regular day, but one that changed all of our lives. Bear arrived. Our sun. And today he is two months old! So much has happened and so much has stayed the same. Everything changed as our family grew from 3 to 4 but it’s like he has been here with us the entire time. We love him so much. Our little guy. And I loved birthing him!
