Península Mitre is now protected!

This peninsula is the largest carbon sink in Argentina, home to one of the largest concentrations of peat in South America, and a key player in the fight against climate change. In December 2022, the Tierra del Fuego legislature unanimously passed a law to create the Península Mitre Natural Protected Area, which safeguards the incredible natural and cultural heritage of these lands.

This newly designated protected area is the result of decades of community activism led by NGOs, local organizations, academics, scientists, artists and, most importantly, the Fuegians themselves, who became the main advocates for these wild lands.
