This is yet another example. 19 years ago in 2004 we were asked by the NBA to Produce and Arrange a very special “duet” version of Marvin Gaye’s classic rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” for NBA AllStar Weekend. We were honored to be asked and were intrigued by the opportunity to use the original Marvin Gaye recording and sonically reuniting him with his daughter Nona Gaye by blending new tracks and Nona’s vocals with his. We felt a huge responsibility to do right by the Gaye family, the NBA, as well as America. The first challenge was the original recording only existed on video tapes and the technology that exists today to remove sounds from recordings hadn’t been perfected yet. We wanted to keep it simple and knew Marvin had used a LinnDrum to create his track so we took our LinnDrum to duplicate his patterns and loop throughout the track. We then added Rhodes and OB8 Bass to give support to Nona’s emotional new vocals. We recorded Nona’s vocals at the legendary Village studios. We had decided that rather than take turns on the verses she should just harmonize with him. When she put the headphones on to listen to the track we had created she immediately started crying as she heard her father’s voice. We paused for a moment and after a few moments she asked us to play it again so she could listen. This time though she didn’t just listen, she SANG. And what she sang on that first magical take is what became the actual arrangement you hear in the performance. Everyone knows my favorite album of all time is “What’s Going On” and Marvin my favorite singer so the chance to connect the generations together was one of the most moving sessions ever. Somewhere I believe I captured some of it on my video camera since iPhones didn’t exist yet but for now I thought I’d share the amazing performance from All Star Weekend. In a partnership we’re celebrating 50 years together it’s a reminder of the 18,250 days that add up to the 50 years.
