Because there is no us without YOU 😎 There was a famous phrase that we turned into a song “Funny How Time Flies When You’re Having Fun”. I think it’s appropriate Terry & I begin our 50th year as friends. You’ve probably heard this story before but this will be the first I’ll tell it in our 50th year. Terry & I were middle school students in Minneapolis when we met June 17th 1973. We were checking into our dorms at Frontier Hall on the University of Minnesota campus for a program called Upward Bound. When I saw Terry for the first time he was in his room sitting on the bed playing Kool & The Gang bass parts on a red, black & green bass. It was love at first sight and I thought “I gotta get to know this brother”. 😍Terry first saw me when I was playing the piano in the school lunchroom (allegedly with a bunch of girls around me) and he said “I gotta get to know this brother”. 😍Needless to say it started us on an unprecedented 50 year journey together. But the best part of looking back is when you have the blessing of looking ahead. I believe the lessons we’ve learned and the knowledge we’ve gained over our 50 years means our 4th quarter will be where our most impactful contributions will happen. When people call us “living legends” I always say the best part is the “living” part because it means we still have a chance to change a life in a positive way though the divine art of music. I also remember the “legend” part only happens because of YOU. We can make the music, but YOU are our partners in the journey of singing it, playing it, delivering it, accepting it, buying it, promoting it, telling people to listen, sharing our stories etc.. Our ultimate goal is to leave music in a better place than we found it. We got a lot of stuff in the pot cooking to do that 🥘 but we can’t do it alone.
