Most people know that my musical talent came from my father Cornbread Harris who just turned 96 years old and still plays gigs every week. What’s less known is my music appreciation came from my mother. The music I heard in the house all day was her records on the stereo. I remember getting her this Al Green album for her birthday. She was an educator who was involved in getting Sesame Street on the air in Minneapolis, and also worked at the Minneapolis Spokesman, which was the first black newspaper in Minnesota. She also made sure I grew up immersed in the arts. Children’s Theater, Guthrie Theatre, Walker Arts Center, Minnesota Orchestra, etc. I was a straight A english student, and when people call me articulate in my ability to express myself, I owe that to my mother Bertha Harris. Her family was one of the first black families in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and she drilled into my head the golden rule “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. That’s the foundation to this day that has allowed me to nurture relationships like my 50 year relationship with Terry Lewis. Thank you, mom. Happy heavenly Mother’s Day🙏🏾🕊️
