40 years ago, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space. Throughout her life, she was known as a brilliant physicist, loyal crew member, and passionate science education advocate. When Ride died in 2012, her obituary revealed that she was a member of the LGBTQ community: having a 27-year partnership with Tam O’Shaughnessy. This revelation added another first to her lengthy list of historic accomplishments by being the first known queer astronaut.
