If he doesn’t find it right away he gets frustrated, squirms, and will eventually pull away. So I put his little hand in mine and he wraps it around my finger, squeezing tightly, burrowing the entirety of his face into my chest. “I want you HERE”, that little grasp says. “Here, close”. He needs my undivided attention. So when I’m nursing, which I am on demand, at all hours of the day, I sit with one arm wrapped around his little body and the other draped across my belly, his tiny fingers intertwined with mine. I have no more hands. He eats hungrily, pressing his body into my mine, knowing I’m not going anywhere. Mind, body, soul. All his. Ours. There is no place for us to be but right here. Every feeding is a practice of presence and and an intimacy so primal, I recognize it more in my bones than I do my logical mind. The less I am able to reach for a book, or my phone, or a distraction, the less I find myself needing one. The more I stay with him using all of my senses; smelling his head, studying his face, listening to his little grunts of contentment; loving him with all my totality… The more I find myself at peace with sitting in this kitchen chair, just holding his tiny little hand in mine. When he had had his fill he eventually pulls away and lets both my breast and my hand go. Milk spills across his face. He sleeps. I stay, sitting here, as I am.
