With its long, curved beak, the purple-banded sunbird is perfectly designed for pollination. Flowers pollinated by sunbirds are often long and tubular with red or orange petals that catch the bird’s eye. The tubular shape of many of these flowers is specifically designed to correspond to the size and shape of the sunbird’s beak, giving this species exclusive access to the nectar within. Since other organisms cannot easily pollinate these flowers, their survival depends on the services the purple-banded sunbird provides. Photo taken @gorongosapark.
