Jiayang Fan was 26 when her mother was diagnosed with A.L.S. Eventually, she began to write about their relationship. “Once upon a time, there lived a woman who wanted to collapse time and space,” Fan writes. “The plan was to exchange her present for her ailing mother’s future. Little did she know that, if she did so, the two of them would merge into one ungainly creature, at once divided and reconstituted, and time would flow through both of them like water in a single stream.” At the link in our bio, read Fan’s Personal History, about immigration, illness, and the pressure to “tell the story well enough.”
