Germany’s felines kill more than 50 million birds each year. To protect its small population of crested larks, the town of Walldorf instituted a cat lockdown—during the birds’ breeding season, cats would have to be kept indoors, and the owner of any cat caught outdoors would be fined €500; any cat that injured or killed a crested lark could incur a penalty of €50,000. Last summer was “a real horror show” for Walldorf’s cats and their owners, one resident said. Her pets refused to use a litter box for weeks, but she couldn’t open the windows for fresh air, lest they escape. The cats threw up, shredded the furniture, and clawed her face while she slept. But state officials were happy with the lockdown’s results: by the end of the season, eight crested larks had fledged.
