The Netflix series “High on the Hog” is the first food series produced and directed by African Americans; it features Black chefs, historians, farmers, entrepreneurs, and cookbook writers. In it, the host, Stephen Satterfield, presides like an unusually solicitous reporter: he listens intently as his guests excavate buried histories and lends a hand as they cook. “My confidence, in a bizarre way, comes from being other,” Satterfield said. The series is now available in 190 countries, with subtitles in Portuguese, Arabic, and 29 other languages, and its second season will be released this fall.
