Wayne Thiebaud’s ’Nine Lollipops’ was painted in 1970 alongside the iconic cakes and pies that brought him fame as one of the leading artists of his generation. The lollipops have proven to be a long-running and beloved subject. In ‘Nine Lollipops,’ Thiebaud creates a particularly opulent and rich example of this popular and beloved theme. He delights in the candy’s design, where the patterns and colors provide a visual playground for the artist’s imagination. In the present work, Thiebaud conjures up the abundance of simple treats as if experienced by a child, who is tasked with the job of picking just one lollipop from the bunch. Thiebaud spoke of his beloved subject of sweets, “[My subject matter] was a genuine sort of experience that came out of my life, particularly the American world in which I was privileged to be.
