Her testimony in the 1955 trial of her husband and his half brother was crucial in their acquittal in one of the most notorious murders in American history. On Aug. 24, 1955, Emmett went to a Mississippi store to buy bubble gum while Donham was working alone there. Emmett’s cousin Simeon Wright, and Ruthie Mae Crawford, another Black teenager, said Emmett passed the money for the bubble gum into Donham’s hand, instead of leaving it on the counter, as white Mississippians generally expected African Americans to do. According to Donham’s testimony in the trial of her husband and his half brother — who stood accused of kidnapping and fatally beating Emmett — Emmett made a sexually suggestive remark to her, grabbed her roughly by the waist and let loose a wolf whistle. More than half a century after the murder, she admitted that she had perjured herself on the witness stand to make Emmett’s conduct sound more threatening than it actually was. But in an unpublished memoir that surfaced last year, Donham stood by her earlier description of events.
