The actress Lizzy Caplan is known for playing complicated women, and her newest role is no exception.

Caplan has spent her career playing women who resist categorization in series like “Party Down,” “Masters of Sex,” “Truth Be Told” and “Fleishman Is in Trouble.” Now, she is playing Alex Forrest, a famously, lethally difficult woman, in the Paramount+ adaptation of “Fatal Attraction.” The characters she plays are not often nice, and they aren’t always the heroines. Often they are too unhappy, too volatile, too in their heads to support conventional story arcs. But they are, in Caplan’s eyes, compulsively watchable. “I don’t think I’d know what to do with a straight-up nice lady,” she said. “I’m only drawn to the messes.”

In “Fatal Attraction,” Caplan and the showrunner, Alexandra Cunningham, tried to evoke empathy in Alex, turning the character from a demon into a complicated woman. In writing the role for Caplan, Cunningham suspected that the actress could make viewers sympathize with a woman they might otherwise condemn.

Finding compassion for the lonely, the crazy, the grating, the sad, the women with their weird boxes of demons has defined Caplan’s mature career. But she doesn’t know another way to be, and she doesn’t want another way. “I do think that’s the secret to everything,” she said.
