Martin Scorsese’s films have always displayed vast ambitions, including by way of duration. “ ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ is one of the greatest of all modern movies, and it runs three hours; ‘The Irishman’ is nearly as great, and in some ways even more ambitious and accomplished, and it runs three hours and 29 minutes,” Richard Brody writes. Cannes initially announced it would not screen Scorsese’s latest, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” in its entirety; it has since been confirmed that the film will première at the festival at a run time of three hours and 26 minutes. At the link in our bio, read Brody in praise of long movies, which, in the right hands, expand the boundaries of cinematic possibilities. Photograph from Moviestore Collection Ltd / Alamy.
