Earlier this week we were live on Facebook from Mr Ueno’s Nanohana Fields and Mazes.

This is one of the most inspiring places to visit in Fukushima prefecture.

Laughter and joy fill the air where children, adults, and elders come to walk through the mazes of these bright flowers. But this was not always a place of joy.

Takayuki Ueno, a local farmer, was heartbroken when he lost his parents and two young children to the tsunami in 2011. A few months later, he decided to return home and plant nanohana (colza) flowers.

The following spring, visitors came. Seeing their smiles enjoying the flower fields, Mr. Ueno could smile again.

For over a decade now, he continues planting flowers and taking care of the fields. Although it is hard work to do it while being a full-time farmer, he says it is worth seeing the children smile as they run through the maze.

Since 2013, each year there are mazes along the fields, and children can win prizes for completing them.

Although the flower fields are already past their full bloom, please consider adding these flower fields to your spring travels next year.

Flowers typically bloom from late April to early May, during the Japanese Golden Week holidays.
