Ida Bagus Anom Suryawan is a sixth-generation mask artisan and dance drama performer who lives near Ubud in central Bali. I followed charming Suryawan throughout the whole process, from carving and painting a wooden mask in his house and workshop to a performance held during the new moon for a house blessing. The persistent scent of burning incense, the brightly colored flowers on the fountains, and the hypnotic rhythm of gamelan music made the experience highly evocative and mystical.
