Henri “Le Douanier” Rousseau’s ‘Les Flamants’

Created in the final year of Rousseau’s life, ‘Les Flamants’ is a superb example of the artist’s highly celebrated series of jungle paintings, which cemented his artistic legacy. Through a multi-layered process, Rousseau’s paintings became rich assemblages, combining different sources of imagery to create a dream-like landscape. Considered a legend amongst artists from his time to today, Rousseau’s appearance on the art market is an extreme rarity, making ‘Les Flamants’ a solidified treasure.

We are honored to offer ‘Les Flamants,’ an extraordinarily rare masterpiece by Henri “Le Douanier” Rousseau in our 20th Century Evening Sale this May. Dated 1910, ‘Les Flamants’ comes to Christie’s from the estate of Payne Whitney Middleton, having been in the family since 1949.
