Photos by @andrea_frazzetta | This year, the Italian Capital of Culture is represented for the first time by two cities: Bergamo and Brescia, in the northern region of Lombardy. The pandemic had a devastating impact on both cities in 2020, and this designation rewarded the residents' desire for rebirth and growth.

As the joint 2023 Italian Capital of Culture, Bergamo and Brescia are providing a yearlong program of projects, exhibitions, and events designed to showcase Italy's cultural heritage and promote tourism.

In these images: Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, at the center of Bergamo's Città Alta; rhinoceros sculpture in the Quadriportico della Vittoria, Brescia; tables at a café in Bergamo's main square; inside Brescia's Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo art gallery; the gardens of Palazzo Moroni, Bergamo; a night view of Brescia's cathedral dome.
