I don’t completely understand what trauma does to the body, heart, and mind—it does some wild and unexpected things—but I do know that where we could have gone to darkness, we chose light. Where we could have not done the hard work of healing, we chose to go the long (sometimes painful, sometimes beautiful) way through. Where we could have turned to hate, we chose love. Our friend @thestorkandthebeanstalk has photographed us at Crystal Cove on three separate occasions. The first two were wildly joyful—we were living on the road and couldn’t believe how good life was.

This photo was from the last time—a year after the darkest time we’d ever faced, one that we are just now—four years later—really emerging from, with healing, rebuilt hearts.

I was going through photos to print and hang in our home as a holiday gift for our little family and came across this image and stopped short.

I see so much here. I can see pain on my wife’s face, but love and passion too. I remember how I felt then—like I wasn’t even in my own body, but with her, right there, she helped me remember just enough to keep going. We held onto each other so closely, even when it hurt.

When I look at these two women now, three years past, I see sorrow and hope living in tandem, pulsing back and forth between us.

I can’t wait to return to that beach some day soon—with her.
