デヴィッド・ボウイさんのインスタグラム動画 - (デヴィッド・ボウイInstagram)「BOWIE AT SANTA MONICA IS FIFTY – CELEBRATE WITH NACHO “He’s outrageous, he screams and he bawls...” You’ve no doubt been celebrating the events of fifty years ago today one way or another, for this is the anniversary of the first of two Bowie concerts at the Civic Auditorium, in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, California, on 20th October 1972. This legendary date on Bowie’s first American tour in the autumn/fall of 1972 produced the first and one of the most popular Bowie bootlegs of all time, after the show was broadcast live by local station KMET-FM, the source of the original bootlegs. Santa Monica was released officially by EMI thirty-six years later in 2008 as Live Santa Monica ’72. It’s a wonderful snapshot of a slightly nervous but confident Bowie as Ziggy Stardust, with a well-honed Spiders From Mars augmented by brilliant new boy, Mike Garson. Anyway, that chap at www.nachosvideos.com/ has produced what might be the closest glimpse of Bowie at this point by creating a new video edit of the superb footage shot by @therealmickrock in San Francisco the following week on 28th October 1972 (as used in his The Jean Genie promo), recut and synced to an audio of The Jean Genie recorded at Santa Monica twenty years ago today. Here’s a bit from @NachoVideo: + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + Editing the Mick Rock material, it is clear to me that he had to slow it down a lot to sync it to the studio version of Jean Genie. And so I have had to do the reverse - I have sped up the footage by around 15% to match the live performance. What is also very evident to me is what a great job Mick Rock did in capturing the footage. It is surely the best live footage we have of Bowie in 1972 and arguably the best live footage of the entire Ziggy Stardust era. So, it was a no-brainer to try to recycle Mick’s brilliant San Francisco footage and sync it to the Santa Monica live version of The Jean Genie.
