Set in post-World War I Berlin, the film also features Sydne Rome as Cilly, Kim Novak as Helga von Kaiserling, David Hemmings as Captain Hermann Kraft and Marlene Dietrich in her final film role: Baroness von Semering.  Despite Bowie claiming the deal clincher to do Just a Gigolo was that “Marlene Dietrich was dangled in front of me”, in fact, the two stars never met. Dietrich played her brief part in Paris, where she lived, with the result being cut into Bowie’s scenes that were shot, along with the rest of the film, in Berlin.  The reception to the film wasn’t good, with Bowie himself famously telling the NME in a 1980 interview: “Everybody who was involved in that film – when they meet each other now, they look away [covers face with hands, laughs]...Listen, you were disappointed, and you weren't even in it. Imagine how we felt...It was my 32 Elvis Presley movies rolled into one.”  Bowie’s one performance on the soundtrack was for Revolutionary Song (Bowie/Fishman).
