The clothing industry has a plastic problem.

Most synthetic clothing—think polyester or nylon—starts as petroleum that’s been extracted from the earth then distilled to create the plastic-based fibers we wear. About 60 percent of clothing is made from these types of plastics, according to the UN. By 2030, it’s expected to hit 73 percent. And for Big Oil and gas, that’s welcome news. As transportation moves away from fossil fuels, experts say plastic will become a lucrative way for the industry to maintain demand.
