“When your food is trendy, it’s like the kiss of death,” says Hillary Renick, a member of the Sherwood Valley Band of Pomo Indians. “If it’s on a plate in wine country, it’s doomed out in the wild.”

Along California’s windswept coast, in the rocky crags and tide pools, California Indians (as this group prefers to be called) have subsisted for millennia on fish, abalone and seaweed, never taking more than can be naturally replaced. The effects of the climate crisis combined with unsustainable harvesting by non-native people have decimated their traditional food sources. Today, despite regulations, they continue the hard work of subsistence gathering and keep their cultural practices alive.
