I’m talking mainly, but not only about romantic love, to be clear, and I don’t talk about this often because I’ve always felt shame in being unattached, whenever I am, which is often. I think soulmate is a spectrum, and I’ve been lucky enough so far in life to have shared a few real, deep connections. I know their depth because I can still feel that connection, when I choose to look there. I’ve found that holding gratitude for the ones that loved me and showed me a thing or two helps me honour what they gave me. I’ve been naive enough to expect a relationship to “complete” me. And I’ve come a long way in learning to love myself as a complete person. And I do. It’s been a long and lonely road getting here, but I do, and it’s liberating. It turns out that accepting myself just as I am is what brings me a feeling of completeness, and learning to do this is a journey. But leaving the door open for a real connection in case it does come around is foundational for me. Love really does make me act foolish, and losing it holds incalculable lessons if I let it. Here’s hoping that next time it finds me, I’m a little less foolish. And in the meantime, it’s a good feeling knowing that I’m enough just as I am. Me and my little family.
