Living only in Florida, the Florida scrub jay is a threatened species whose population has declined more than 90 percent during the past century, primarily from destruction and fragmentation of the native oak scrub habitat on which it depends. Because of fragmentation, most of the jay populations are becoming inbred. Scientists are working to mitigate the problem through a technique called genetic rescue. Families of jays from the largest, most genetically diverse populations, such those in Ocala National Forest, are translocated to the smallest and most genetically impoverished populations, such as those in Jonathan Dickinson State Park. In the second photo, ecologist Sarah Fitzpatrick observes one of the jays she and her team translocated. Like the endangered Florida panther, the Florida scrub jay is an ambassador for protecting connected networks of habitat that both species need to survive.
