This is Ella Baker. She played a major role in three of the biggest groups of the civil rights movement. She was an organizer within the NAACP and helped co-found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the organization that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. led. She also helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Baker taught volunteers that the movement shouldn't depend on any single charismatic leader and that they should empower people to become activists in their own community. She risked her life rallying support in rural Southern towns and fought back against the sexism that sometimes tainted the movement.
