As president of the Arkansas NAACP, Daisy Gatson Bates planned the strategy for desegregation in the state. She selected nine Black students, and in 1957, drove them to Central High School. She protected the students, now known as the Little Rock Nine, from crowds. The White school had resisted desegregation even after the US Supreme Court ruled that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. The event was a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement.
