thephotosocietyさんのインスタグラム写真 - (thephotosocietyInstagram)「Photo by @nickcobbing I caught sight of this iceberg from the deck of a ship one night, it was midsummer in the Arctic and the sun seemed to sit low on the horizon forever, like a permanent golden hour. One berg glittered among the rest of the ice like a jewel. I remember putting my binoculars down and attempting to persuade the crew that it was worth stopping for. They didn’t take too much convincing to change course, as it was so unique -even when viewed from 100s of metres away. When we got close to it we were awe-struck. The ice it was made from was so highly compressed, so devoid of air bubbles, that we could almost see through it to the cliffs on the other side. Over the last month new science papers have been released highlighting the loss of ice mass across our planet. One study estimates that the “Earth is now losing 1.2 trillion tons of ice each year” An important area of research is the melting of glaciers from below by currents of warmer water, as distinct from warming from the atmosphere above. The berg in the photograph is calved from a glacier on south east Greenland.
