Photo by @jimrichardsonng / Eilean Donan castle on Loch Duich gets prime billing with every photographer who goes to Scotland, it would seem. It might be the most photographed castle next to Edinburgh. It looks the part and it's got the history, going back to the island's naming after a sixth-century martyred Celtic saint. But what we see today is a rebuilt castle. The original was blown up by Royal Navy forces in 1719 during one of the Jacobite uprisings. It sat as a pile of rubble until being rebuilt between 1919 and 1932; the bridge was added at that time. (Building bridges out to your defensive castle on an island in medieval times was never a good idea.) Since being opened to the public in 1955, it has grown ever more popular; it's pretty much our vision of what a castle in the Scottish Highlands ought to look like.
