“When this fight started, in 2012, they were asking for $15 an hour then,” said Cristian Cardona, who works at a McDonald’s in Orlando, Florida. “It’s no longer enough. By the time we get 15, it’s going to be even less.” Cardona, like millions of employees, is constrained by debt. His employer, like hundreds of corporations, has been liberated by it, thanks to fiscal policies of the past decade. Today, fast food workers in 15 cities across the country will go on strike in conjunction with Black History Month to demand a $15-per-hour wage, as Congress considers including the measure as part of its COVID-19 rescue plan.
