"Killing Rage: Ending Racism" by bell hooks
#
bell hooks is undoubtedly my favorite author when it comes to books about social justice. I am consistently astounded by her ability to write clearly and precisely about the ways that race, gender, and class intersect and provide obstacles to liberation. She rejects simplistic approaches and roots her feminist politics in love; not one that is made up of platitudes, which is not love but lies about the necessity and depth of the work to be done, but a love born out of the fierce pursuit of liberation.

And the passage below makes me think about the ways that so many of us white folx are so comfortable sharing images of Black trauma because Black victimhood feels most comfortable to us. But when leaders of #BlackLivesMatter call for #DefundThePolice or abolishing prisons, we collectively find it so hard to get on board, let alone do the research and deep self-inquiry necessary to understand what these demands really mean. Needing to witness Black trauma to "fuel" our dedication to anti-racism is a symptom of white supremacy.

"Militant resistance to white supremacy frightened white Americans, even those liberals and radicals who were committed to the struggle to end racial discrimination. There was a great difference between a civil rights struggle that worked primarily to end discrimination and radical commitment to black self-determination. Ironically, many whites who had struggled side by side with black folks responded positively to images of black victimization. Many whites testified that they looked upon the suffering of black people in the segregated South and were moved to work for change. The image of blacks as victims has an accepted place in the consciousness of every white person; it was the image of black folks as equals, as self-determining that had no place-that could evoke no sympathetic response. In complicity with the nation-state, all white Americans responded to black militancy by passively accepting the disruption of militant black organizations and the slaughter of black leaders."
