With Mardi Gras parades canceled, the famous floats have found a new home: houses.⁣

As the coronavirus outbreak spread to every part of the country and economy, tourism was one of the first activities to disappear. Tourism makes New Orleans run, and that is no more evident than during the Mardi Gras season, which typically brings in millions of dollars to the city every February.⁣

But this year, marching bands will not march. Bars throughout the city are closed in advance, and parts of the historic French Quarter are blocked off. When parades were canceled, dozens of float artists and wood workers and organizers — known colloquially as “krewes” and that go by names like Muses, Orpheus and Bacchus — were laid off.⁣

Organizers and residents were not ready to give up. Shortly after the cancellation was announced, Megan Boudreaux, who had not previously helped organize parades, tweeted: “It’s decided. We’re doing this. Turn your house into a float and throw all the beads from your attic and your neighbors walking by.”⁣

Floats have a history of incorporating national political figures and imagery of musicians and well-known local figures. And some are created to represent the identities of the groups that organize Mardi Gras celebrations, like Muses (first photo), a female-only krewe, and the Krewe of Nomtoc, an all-male African-American organization that parades. Boudreaux has counted more than 3,000 house floats in the main Orleans Parish part of the city alone, with countless more springing up by the day. ⁣

“It’s so New Orleans to take a bad situation and turn into a positive,” said Kelli Starrett, who had a float installed at her home by Rene Píerre, who has worked as a float artist for 34 years. “We’re not going to have a parade. OK, we’ll decorate houses, and we’ll find a way to employ artists and raise money for charity. This speaks to the resiliency of the people in the city.”⁣
