For nearly 20 years, the photographer Matthew D. White has documented the landscapes and communities of Plaquemines Parish, where, in its southern stretches in Louisiana, the muddy Mississippi meets the blue water of the Gulf of Mexico.

Whenever he visits the last miles of the Mississippi River, he finds himself quietly astonished by the stark, minimalist beauty and soothed by the constant, soft hiss of wind in the tall roseau cane.

“There’s peace and quietude in Plaquemines Parish, among the citrus groves, oil refineries and the salty breeze,” he writes for @nytimestravel. “Communities continue to rebuild here despite a seemingly never-ending series of storms and floods, amid a landscape that’s constantly changing.” Tap the link in our bio to see more.
