Yesterday afternoon, Mikey “Redd” O’Shaughnessy -- 2016 Wave of the Winter winner, who had already snagged a few solid pits over the morning -- went down hard at the apex of the reef at Backdoor. Redd went over the falls and hit the reef with his head and was knocked unconscious and held under for at least two waves. Surfers in the lineup saw his board and acted quickly to get him to the surface, and the North Shore lifeguards were quick to come in and get him on a ski to the beach, where they worked on him until he was taken to the hospital. Luckily, Redd was wearing a helmet.

“By the looks of his helmet, both sides of his temple are cracked,” Billy Kemper said. “He probably wouldn’t be breathing right now without that thing.” Redd is currently out of ICU and off the ventilator, but still on watch for secondary drowning, according to sources. Our best thoughts and wishes for a speedy recovery for Mikey. The vid above is from a wave he’d caught earlier in the day.
