As part of Hot Wheels’ celebration of Black History Month, we honor the life and accomplishments of Wendell Scott.⁣

Scott was a stock car driver and like many other drivers who competed during the early years of NASCAR he got his start running moonshine and competing in small-time races. But as a Black driver in a traditional Southern sport, the challenge was even greater.⁣

After battling prejudice on and off the race track, he debuted in the Grand National (now Cup) Series in 1961 and became the first Black driver to⁣ win a race at NASCAR’s highest level in 1963.⁣

Yet even his triumphs were met with opposition. Due to the controversy that surrounded the first Black NASCAR winner, Scott wasn’t officially recognized as the race winner until two years later, and his family had to wait until 2010 to receive the trophy from the win.⁣

Wendell Scott would go on to have a successful racing career through the rest of the 1960s and into the 1970s, competing in nearly 500 Grand National series races before retiring in 1973. He passed away in 1990 and was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2015. In addition to his success behind the wheel, he was also the only Black man to own a NASCAR team until until NBA legend Michael Jordan’s venture into NASCAR team ownership for 2021.⁣ #BlackHistoryMonth #HotWheels
