There are places that will assure you that they are wild—and mean to stay so. The Isle of Muck is a tenuous place for people to try to make a living, and it is wonderfully indifferent to human comfort. The horses on the beach on the Isle of Muck this day were by turns curious and diffident, frisky and calm. They belong to Lawrence MacEwan and his clan, the owners of the small island, and they pretty much roam wherever they want. It was such a liberating feeling to see them out there. Besides that, the ferry boat wouldn't be back for two days (and maybe not then). You can’t take your car to Muck, but there is only one road and it is only a mile long. Cell phone service is lousy—blessedly so if, by going to a small island, you mean to escape. Obligations would return; I knew that. But for the moment, it was just me and horses on the beach.
