This week's #CanadaSpotlight touches on two of Canada’s great travellers, humpback and gray whales! This is part one of a three part series touching on animals that travel long distances regularly in or through Canada.⠀
⠀
Each spring humpback and gray whales embark on one of nature's most phenomenal journeys travelling thousands of kilometres north to Canadian waters to reconnect with their summer feeding grounds. ⠀

⠀
Travelling over 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles) from the tropics, humpbacks make their way north to feeding grounds in and around Newfoundland and Labrador. A natural acrobat, humpbacks regularly leap out of the water only to create massive splash moments later. Scientists aren’t entirely sure why they do this, some think the whales are trying to wash off parasites but others think they do it just for fun!⠀
⠀
Western Gray Whales (📸 3 & 4)⠀
⠀
Off the coast of Vancouver Island’s west coast you can watch these gentle giants as they make their incredible annual 16,000+ kilometre (10,000+ mile) journey north. In fact, Gray Whales are such great travellers that they currently hold the world record for the longest known migration of a mammal! To truly appreciate their immense size it’s recommended that you take a scenic float plane tour where you can see their entire body among the aquamarine glow of the Pacific.⠀
