The modern story of race in America might be told quite differently if there really were, as there was once meant to be, a prosperous Black mini-metropolis of 55,000 people in North Carolina, serving as a beacon for activists and entrepreneurs everywhere. In 1969, the activist Floyd McKissick founded Soul City—a settlement that he promised would be “a place where Black people can come, and know they’re wanted.” By 1980, the Department of Housing and Urban Development had foreclosed on the property, leaving McKissick with a small fraction of the land and some mortgages to pay.
