Her granddaughter Kim is a follower and told me they are trying to keep her entertained with letters. I asked if anyone else wanted to write and hundreds responded. This week I got a message. “I have news to report! My grandma has been getting oodles of letters. They started rolling in from a preschool in Kansas City, letters from Long Island, South Carolina and California to name a few. My grandma is having trouble understanding how all these people decided she was worthy of these cards, but is just tickled to be receiving them. I wish I could have recorded trying to explain social media to her. My grandma enlisted the help of my mother and they are sending thank you notes to everyone for sending so much cheer. I would like you and your daughters to know that your acts of kindness are catching! They are not only putting good into the world, they are spreading it!” A few people asked to know more about Elizabeth’s story. She grew up in Vienna and lived a happy childhood. In March of 1938 (known as the Anschluss, when Nazi Germany annexed Austria), her life changed overnight. The Nazis took everything her parents owned, the apartment, their valuables, and acquired it for their own. They needed to flee and were able to secure passage to Italy and then to Shanghai. They lived in Chauo Fang ghetto for almost ten years and Elizabeth remembers always being hungry. She says her father’s mantra got her through. “No matter how bad times get, never compromise your principles”. He removed his gold fillings and sold them to pay for Elizabeth’s school. They survived the war and immigrated to America in 1947. Her father’s family were all killed in Terezin. Her mother’s family, with the exception of two uncles, were all killed in various concentration camps. Elizabeth tells her story because she wants to warn future generations what can happen when we aren’t paying attention. Lastly, Elizabeth got her first vaccine this week! Kim says that as soon as it’s safe, they will visit her. “I will film her saying thank you with her cards!”」2月5日 13時16分 - mommyshorts
