This is my grandmother Mina. Everyone called her Minnie. She was a teenager when the Nazis invaded her town in Poland and spent the rest of the Holocaust on the run, hiding in the forest, with a group of people from her town including a man named Irving who would become her husband, my grandfather. We don’t know a lot of the details because although the two of them survived, they never discussed it and both died young. I just found out today that Minnie’s mother’s name was Adela. That means my mother Adela was named after her. I’m not sure why I never knew this, except that with so many deaths, there are so many forgotten stories, with no one to tell them. Yesterday was Holocaust Remembrance Day. I am thinking about my family members who survived and the many more who did not, like my great grandmother Sarah (on my grandfather’s side), my great grandfather Joesph, and all the family members for which we don’t even have photos. #neverforget
