Photos by @jonathankingston / Can you guess what made this track in the sandy and volcanic landscape of the Galápagos Islands? It was left by an animal that has the ability to swim over 1,600 miles (2,575 kilometers) to return to the exact same beach where it hatched. The Pacific green sea turtle enjoys a protected nesting site in Ecuador’s Galápagos National Park, but unfortunately it is a threatened species worldwide due to habitat loss and drowning deaths in fishing nets.

In the first frame, you can see from the tractor-like flipper marks that the turtle has a fairly inelegant and labored gait on land. But what it lacks in grace above the water it makes up for in the water. I love how the turtle's flippers reach to the sky like a bird about to take flight in the second frame. The final image captures this underwater “flight” in all its grace.
