Photo by @babaktafreshi / Swipe to see the entire view of Mauna Kea's shadow in the air as the sun was about to rise on the opposite horizon. I was standing on the 13,800-foot (4,200-meter) summit, which is the top of Hawaii and the highest point in the Pacific Ocean. This dormant volcano is sacred to the native culture and also home to a world-leading observatory that has contributed to many breakthroughs. The shape of mountain shadows at sunrise and sunset do not relate to the mountain profile and the peak shape. They are almost always a symmetrical triangle due to the perspective effect. This shadow is an immensely long tunnel of unlit air, not a shadow on the ground. From the summit you stand at the top edge of the shadow and look out along the tunnel length of more than a hundred miles (160 kilometers).
