Photo by @daisygilardini / A king penguin on the long beach at Volunteer Point colony in the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) is going to sea to forage for the day at the first light of sunrise. King penguins aren’t picky eaters exactly, but they’re very specific about what they hunt and catch. They eat small schooling fish like lanternfish (myctophids) year-round, especially during breeding season. When the weather grows colder, they eat more icefish and cephalopods—mollusks, octopus, and squid—to supplement their winter diet. Natural predators include leopard seals and orcas, which in part explains their unique coloring. Penguins are diurnal—that is, they hunt during the day, when the ocean surface is likely to be brightly lit. When viewed from below, their white bellies appear to blend in with the water’s surface. Viewed from above, their black backs seem to disappear into the ocean’s depths. Their “formal wear” tuxedo-like appearance isn’t just for show, in other words. It’s about survival.
