A haven that creates sustainable conditions for elephants and humans to live side by side wins Best Sanctuary in the Wallpaper* Design Awards 2021. Thai architect Boonserm Premthada (@boonserm_premthada) designed Elephant World in the country’s Surin province to preserve the way of life of the local Kui people, elephant keepers for centuries but more recently threatened by urbanisation, the decline of their village, and poverty.⁠⠀

‘The architecture performs three functions,’ says Premthada. ‘Preserving the culture; reviving the forest to ensure a supply of food and herbal medicines for elephants and providing a water source; and building a self-sufficient community economy through sustainable tourism that respects elephants and the Kui way of life.’⁠⠀

Some 200 resident elephants roam freely around the new buildings, which comprise an observation tower, a museum with open-air, jumbo-width corridors, and a cultural courtyard.⁠⠀
