Winner of the Best New Public Building category in the Wallpaper* Design Awards 2021, the Temple of Steps by Sameep Padora & Associates (@sameeppadora) combines modernity and tradition.
The Hindu temple reinvigorates the physical and spiritual landscape around Nandyal, in Andhra Pradesh. A nearby canal, previously used to irrigate the surrounding cotton and chilli fields, had dried up, so the architect redirected the overflow from neighbouring limestone quarries to form a pond.
The temple’s volumes nod to the traditional Indian ghat, a flight of steps leading down to water, while Padora also drew on the tenth-century temple in the city of Tirupati. Black limestone slabs form the steps and surfaces, while the structure incorporates soil and planting, which help with cooling and further connect the temple with its setting.
